Verilux Natural Spectrum Lighting Review + Giveaway! Ends 11/21

These bulbs arrived at an interesting time. A few years ago, I dutifully switched all of my household lightbulbs to the curly florescent kind. They were better for the environment! They were supposed to last some ridiculous number of years! Who couldn’t get behind that? Never mind the weak, sad quality of light they put forth, that never really seemed to illuminate much of anything. And THEN, just recently, all of these bulbs which were supposed to last so long that I’d probably forget how to change them began burning out. And weirdly, I noticed several people complaining of the same thing on twitter and Facebook. Hmmph!

So yeah, I’ve exposed your dirty little secrets Mister Energy Efficient Lightbulb Companies. Now if I mysteriously disappear, only to surface with  a smiley face of lightbulbs screwed into my lifeless mouth and eyesockets YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

Ahem. As I was saying, this was an opportune time to try these Natural Spectrum Lights from Verilux.  This is the same company that produces those lamps that help combat seasonal mood disorders, so I was terribly curious.

When I first put the bulb in the socket, I was a little underwhelmed. Though the light was a different color, it was still pretty dim. Then I remembered it takes these bulbs a few minutes to warm up to their full potential glow! Ah-ha! After waiting a bit the difference was starkly obvious. These bulbs give off a decidedly cool, bluish light but unlike some of those other wan, sickly florescents, these have such a bright, crisp quality.

The clarity really feels almost like sunlight, but less harsh. Reading, for instance, was a soothing treat under these bulbs. I also put them in my workroom, where it’s so much nicer now trying to discern exact colors and deal with tiny components like seed beads and pins. If I sound like a gushing fangirl, I am! Especially going into the darker, drearier months, it feels like such a treat to find these lightbulbs which I can tell will make the background of each day a little nicer. I’ve never been this excited about lightbulbs!

To bring you the facts: these are a 2 1/8″ w x 5 1/4″ h  23W bulb, but equivalent to a normal 100W. They are supposed to bring you 10,000 hours of bright, natural spectrum light- which works out to about 9 years if you use them fo 3 hours per day (less, of course, depending on your usage). They are designed to save up to $168 in energy costs per package. I obviously haven’t tested them long enough to confirm any of that, but honestly the light they cast is so nice that if they burnt out simultaneously in a year, I’d happily go buy more.

  1. I am all about good lighting. I have switched out most of my bulbs to CFLs, but I don’t love the harshness. I am not sure I yet believe that CFLs last longer than regular tungstens do. I keep using them anyway. I have recycled a good number of them that have burned out. I would love to try some that give a more pleasant light.

P.S. always recycle CFLs at an appropriate facility and don’t throw them away in your normal garbage as they contain mercury.

  2. I haven’t tried Verilux bulbs yet, but possibly in the future after reading your review. I like my lighting to be not too bright, I tend to get migraines, however I also like to be able to work with sufficient light. I also like lightbulbs that last and conserve energy.

  3. I have never heard of Verilux bulbs before reading this post. One of my pet peeves is sitting in a room with no lighting to be able to see without straining. I like a nice bright light and the energy saving bulbs that I have tried so far are to dull and dim. I’ll be sure to look for these. Thanks for sharing the review & giveaway with us.

  4. I have never tried those bulbs but i am starting to get very annoyed by the bulbs i have now, they keep going out and they dont brighten up my house. I need some LED or CFL bulbs to brighten my house and to have long lasting bulbs.

  6. I haven’t tried Verilux light bulbs yet. Sadly, I don’t have a high opinion of the many of the lighting choices available currently. I am encouraged by what I read from your review about Verilux and will be searching for them in stores.

  7. When we first switched to CFL’s from incandescent we saw a huge drop in our electricity usage, but I think LED’s are actually the future.
