I have to say this is one of the most fun items I’ve had the chance to review since starting this blog. As a child, the towering dinosaur skeletons on museum field trips left an indelible impression in my mind that led to a lifelong interest in palaeontology. While other girls would squeal in distaste at getting their clothes dirty, I was fascinated by the thought of these vast puzzle pieces, entire species, buried like treasure in the earth all around us.
If I’d had this kit then would have been in pure heaven. I’ve tried to instill the same sense of curiosity and wonder about the natural world in the girls, so I knew they would love this too.
And by this, I mean the Ultimate Dinosaur Dig Kit from Discover With Dr. Cool. The kit contains three actual genuine dinosaur fossils along with the tools to allow your child to excavate them. Tell me your inner 7 year old didn’t just do a cartwheel in excitement!
The fossils are buried in a brick with a T-rex skeleton imprinted on the front. Buried inside, your child can painstakingly uncover a real dinosaur tooth, a chunk of dinosaur bone and – the one I’m sure little boys specially are going to love- fossilized dinosaur poop. It’s strange how poo doesn’t cease to be gross and funny even after millions of years. There is also a a full miniature dinosaur skeleton for your child to assemble and display on the included stand with little printed feet.
The include digging tool, brush and magnifying glass will make your child feel like a real scientific explorer.
They’ve also including a guidebook with awesome pictures and facts about dinosaurs as well as an activity book containing puzzles and challenges to prolong the learning fun.
This kit has won some impressive awards including Academics’ Choice – Brain Toy Award 2013, Preferred Choice Award – Creative Child Magazine 2013 and Brain Child Toy Award – Tillywig Toy Awards 2013, and I can see why. It leads your child through a hands-on learning experience that they will likely remember for the rest of their lives. And just personally I tend to believe that kids (and all people!) retain information better through doing instead of reading or watching.
We personally absolutely loved the Dinosaur Dig Kit. I think a fun idea would be to purchase several and have them as focal point for a themed party. You could purchase cute fedoras in bulk from somewhere like Oriental Trading and serve dino-themed food and drinks. The kids could work in teams to excavate the fossils and solve the puzzles or play games to decide who will get to take each fossil or desk model home.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
