Inferno: Alexander McQueen

As a teenager reading slick, fat fashion bibles which sometimes inspired yet too often only reaffirmed the rank disillusionment I felt with the world, Alexander McQueen was one of my heroes- though I’m sure he would have worn that title like an ill-fitting suit. He represented punk rock and filth and a kind of sizzling, sleazy glamour that few dared to venture toward. His muses were the beautiful misfits, and his creations were walking art.

Even now, I feel many don’t fully appreciate his genius. Inferno gives us a glimpse into his soul during what was possibly the height of his career, during the show for the Dante collection.

This luxe book is filled with over 100 photos from behind the scenes, which somehow cast a light while still only adding to the mystique. The book itself is beautifully designed, with angels and demons, the sacred and profane, leading us on a darkly merry dance throughout. From his choice of atypical models, to his fabrics, accoutrements and even his venues, he went against the established order- and all of that is captured here, demanding to be pored over again and again.

From the publisher:

London 1996: Alexander McQueen took over the Hawksmoor masterpiece Christ Church in London’s East End for what was quite possibly the greatest fashion show on earth. A candle-lit, cruciform catwalk with a backdrop of stained-glass windows set the tone for an extraordinary collection. Lace sat against chiffon and rubbed shoulders with couture and club-culture clothing and digital print. Dante was the seminal collection that would resonate throughout Alexander McQueen’s career.

This book features unique photographs shot behind the scenes, with raw, unseen pictures of the designer, models and clothes. The fashion creatives who worked with McQueen to make the show such a success recall this pivotal time in the designer’s career and reflect on what made ‘Dante’ truly groundbreaking. Newly created imagery of clothes shown on the catwalk gives an insight into why this collection was so special.
