HOT + SWEET Smoked Spanish Paprika Powder Review

Paprika is one of my favorite spices. The gorgeous clay-red color alone is enough to draw me in and begin exciting my senses. I was pleased to try out two different kinds, the Hot Smoked and Sweet Smoked flavors of Spanish Paprika Powder from Kiva. Some of my favorite ways to use this spice are on hard boiled or deviled eggs and on rice and vegetable dishes.


I could immediately tell these were fresh, high quality spices. They don’t have that dried-up, slightly dusty flavor that inferior spices sometimes get when fillers are added or low-quality ingredients are used. They are imported from La Vera in Spain and are prepared only in small batches according to local, ancient custom by slow smoking them over holm oak wood for at least fourteen days.


The Sweet Smoked has a deeply rich flavor with a slight sweetness underlying. The Hot Smoked is similar with a bit more heat and spice. I didn’t feel like it was overwhelmingly hot though. I found the complexity of flavor tantalizing to my taste buds and fun to experiment with. I’ve been trying to use less salt and more herbs and spices to add healthier flavor to my cooking, so trying out new ones s always fun! I feel like these will become a new staple in my kitchen.
