Our Halloween parties have taken on sort of an epic life of their own. At random times during the year, people I do not even recognize will stop me in a store and ask if we’re having our party again this year. I’m not gonna lie, it makes me happy.
The parties are usually a two-part affair. Early in the evening we have everyone over to the house, which is decorated in it’s finest spookery, down to disembodied hands crawling their way out of the sinks beneath blood-soaked messages scrawled hastily on mirrors. Then we have the indoor games and activities, like face-painting, Fear Factor, costume judging, apple bobbing, fortune telling and the ouija board.
Once it’s fully dark and all the guests have arrived, we pile everyone into the back of the big truck, filled with stacks of hay. We pass out cozy blankets for the chilly, dark ride which winds through the woods as we tell ghost stories. The ride ends with a scary climb down a steep hill to our bonfire spot. Here we have benches in a circle around the roaring fire, where more stories can be told as marshmallows are roasted. We always have our pumpkin pinatas, which are real pumpkins we’ve hollowed out and filled with treats that the kids can take turns trying to smash with a baseball bat.
Every year one of the crowd favorites are the Glow Stick Bracelets and other glow jewelry! We buy them in bulk- these ones come in tubes of 100, with a bag of connectors. The kids absolutely love stringing them together to make fun, outrageous jewelry.
The hidden bonus for me is that it allows me to see where every kid is, even when they start to wander off and explore. This is extra important as we end the night with some friends who have remained hidden running down into the clearing in freaky masks to chase the kids. These bracelets are long-lasting and are usually still glowing during the ride back home. I would highly recommend them for any kid or teen event- we always have a wide range of ages and everyone seems to love them regardless of age!
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
