August is perfect kite-flying weather, plus a good time to help little ones with their reading before school starts again. Benji & The Giant Kite by Alan C. Fox and illustrated by Eefje Kuijl will have their imaginations soaring above the clouds.
This sweet book is an oversized hardcover, nicely designed for reading out loud to babies and young children. The story features Benji, who loves nothing more than making and flying kites. There are several lessons being taught through the simple prose- first of all to persevere and never give up on your dreams, despite setbacks or failures. The second is about responsibility, hard work, and saving money for your goals. The book ends with another nice message about not holding on too tightly to material possessions. Sometimes there’s magic in just letting go.
The illustrations are bright and entertaining, adding depth to the story. The artwork is a sort of brushstroke painting technique that is reminiscent of a wax-resist process in some spots. There are also small elements of almost photo-realism that help create a rich backdrop that kids will want to visit again and again.
Alan Fox explains that like all of his books, “BENJI AND THE GIANT KITE is based on a real-life incident. This one happened when I was a child. I decided to tell the story, because I wanted to share the sense of achievement I felt by working hard to obtain something I really loved. But once I saw the kite flying at the beach, I wanted to let it go. My dream had been accomplished. It was time move on to another, new experience. You must always keep going to fulfill your dreams and aspirations.”
BENJI AND THE GIANT KITE is the second in Alan Fox’s series of picture books. The first, BENJI AND THE 24 POUND BANANA SQUASH, was named a notable children’s book of 2017 by Booklist magazine and has become a much-loved story for youngsters and parents alike.
Benji & The Giant Kite is available this month from Clavis Books, and is aimed at children ages 4-6.
